Lackluster performance leaves Greyhounds smarting from big defeat

A much anticipated football game between the only two Southern Hills League schools to field varsity football squads turned out to be anything but exciting last Friday night in Fayetteville. The Rockets (2-6) literally manhandled the visiting Manchester Greyhounds, dominating both sides of the ball on their way to a convincing 48-0 victory. Fayetteville held the Manchester offense to just six first downs in the entire game, only two in the second half as they rolled to their second win of the 2012 campaign. Meanwhile, the Rocket offense racked up over 300 total yards, most all of them from a dominant running attack.

The Indians were in Georgetown to face the 11-2-1 G-Men, who like Peebles were fresh from winning a league title and also have their sights on a nice post-season run.

A breath taking heartbreak

I didn't want it for me. I had been there, done that, and had my celebrations on the streets of Cincinnati. I wanted it for him. When my son came to me last Wednesday night, laptop in hand, and pointed out to me that we could sit in the sun deck of Great American Ball Park the next day, I was hesitant at first. "But Dad, it's a Game Five," he said. So, I looked over at his mother who said one word, "Go" and the decision was made.

Fantasy football owners could have been salivating last Wednesday night at the performance of Manchester eighth grader Arturo Hernandez. Leading the junior high Greyhounds in a home game to their first win of the season, Hernandez crossed the goal line four times, twice on offense and twice on defensive scores, threw a touchdown pass, and for good measure ran in a trio of two-point conversions. The Hounds quarterback personally involved in 36 of the team's 42 points in a 42-28 win over the Bracken County Polar Bears.
