New solar compactors to process recycling at ACOVSD

The Adams County/Ohio Valley School District (ACOVSD) and the Adams Clermont Solid Waste District (ACSWD) are continuing their partnership and commitment to environmental awareness in the schools. The ACSWD recently wrote for and was awarded a grant to purchase two solar compactors for recycling to be placed at both West Union and North Adams Elementary schools.

The new solar compactors are powered by four 100 watt solar panels each. These solar compactors allow for increased efficiency in school recycling and operate at no additional cost to the schools. This addition is yet another feather in the cap for the ACOVSD as their dedication to energy efficiency and resource conservation has made them a leader in sustainability on both a state and national level.

Steve Wolfe, Facilities Manager for the school district, was excited about the addition of the solar compactors.

"We are very thankful to the Adams Clermont Solid Waste District for working so diligently to obtain a grant that has allowed us to add solar powered compactors to the recycling collection bins at our school sites. Our district is very proud of our recycling program which has not only saved the district money, but has diverted tons of trash from our landfills," said Wolfe.

"This is just another way that our school district continues to be a leader in sustainability. Our Energy Star rated facilities, our rooftop solar arrays, our nationwide recognition as a Green Ribbon School Award winner and now our solar powered recycling bins will continue to raise environmental awareness to our students, staff, and the community we serve," Wolfe added.

If you are interested in learning more about the rooftop solar arrays being used by the schools you can go to the ACOVSD website at: www.ohiovalley.k12.oh.us/ and click the "solar updates" link to view real time updates on the amount of solar energy being harvested by the schools.

If you are interested in having a free recycling education program for your school, business, or group please contact Sam Perin, Education Specialist with Adams Brown Recycling at (937)378-3431 or by e-mail at sperin@abcap.net. Adams Brown Recycling is a division of ABCAP.
