After jumping to a quick lead, the JV North Adams Lady Devils couldn't hold on and lost a close one last Thursday night on their home floor to the Fayetteville Lady Rockets, 46-44. A quick lead in the opening period turned into a fourth quarter deficit that the Lady Devils had to climb out of, but they fell just a single basket short.

With the strong play of Katie Pertuset in the paint, the Lady Devils scored the game's first seven points and a three-pointer by Allyson Campton left the home team leading 16-13 after one.

In the second stanza, the North Adams girls had numerous easy scoring opportunities but could not capitalize, but still held a five-point advantage until a late three by Fayetteville's Kate Boler sent the two teams to intermission with the Lady Devils nursing a 23-21 lead.

The third quarter saw the home team begin to force things on offense that weren't available, leading to just a six-point frame. The Lady Rockets came back to take the lead but another Campton bucket pulled the Lady Devils to within one at 30-29 with one period to go.

Things began to look gloomy for North Adams as their guests opened up a 40-33 lead with just over two minutes to play, but two Pertuset free throws and a Taylor Wylie three suddenly turned the game into a one possession contest with 1:38 to play. A Fayetteville score pushed the lead back to four but North Adams answered with a three-pointer off the right wing by Cati Butler to make it 42-41.

The Lady Devils could not score on their next two possessions and the Rockets took advantage with free throws that gave them a 45-41 lead. With 17 seconds remaining, Cassie Davis drained yet another three for the home team and again it was a one-point affair. North Adams fouled and the lady Rockets got one of two from the line, giving the home team one more shot but that last shot attempt was off the mark and the Fayetteville JV had escaped with the 46-44 win.

Though coming up short, the Lady Devils placed seven girls in the scoring column, paced by 15 points from Katie Pertuset. Cati Butler added 9 and Cassie Davis 6. The Lady Devils had no answer for Fayetteville's Samantha Murphy, who led all scorers in the game with 22 points.
