West Union Village Council met in regular session on July 14 at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building, with Mayor Ted Grooms presiding. Call to order, pledge to the flag and roll call: John Lafferty – present, Mark Brewer – present, Benny McCarty – present, Jason Buda – present, Randy Gifford – present, Steve Rothwell – present; also in attendance: Tanya Johnson – Clerk, Shelley Gifford – Treasurer, Roy Stricklett – Police Chief, Lisa Rothwell – Solicitor.

The 2016 Tax Budget Hearing, after some discussion, motion by Benny McCarty to accept the budget, second by Randy Brewer, roll call vote: all yea, motion passed.

A motion was made by Mark Brewer to approve the minutes of the regular meeting on June 23, 2015 as distributed, second by Benny McCarty, roll call vote: all yea, motion passed.

A motion by Steve Rothwell to approve payment of bills was submitted, second by Randy Brewer, roll call vote: all yea, motion passed.

A motion was introduced by Benny McCarty to approve the statement of receipts from Mayor’s Court for the month of June for the net amount of $6,149.94, second by Mark Brewer, roll call vote: all yea, motion passed.

Next came the report from Roy Stricklett, West Union Police Chief.

Stricklett told council he was having the Solicitor check into a matter where a person is asking about policy and procedures, type of weapons and various other questions and council agreed to have this checked out.

Officers Young, Myers and Grooms are being sent to a free BCA Operator Training Class for the BCA Datamaster machine. Officer Sanderson has passed his test to be senior operator for this machine.

Stricklett talked about a mini round-up at the fair, and other items pertaining to the fairgrounds.

Mayor Grooms informed council that the village had a resident that passed away. The Police Department and Clerk, Patty Foote, did a great job finding the next of kin and taking care of this situation.

Council member Randy Brewer informed council of property that needs to be cleaned up, trees that need to be cut, and potholes that need to be filled. Brewer had a request to have the minutes entered on the village’s website. The Clerk will begin to include the minutes on the website.

Also, council member Randy Brewer told council the ex-council member, Shawn Francis, was in the hospital, and to include him in their thoughts.

A motion was made by Jason Buda to bring Patty Foote to a full-time employee, starting July 27, 2015, $10 per hour, and no insurance, second by Steve Rothwell, roll call vote: all yea, motion passed.

A motion by Mark Brewer to bring Debbie Vires to a full-time employee, starting July 27, 2015, $10 per hour, and no insurance, second by Benny McCarty, roll call vote: all yea, motion passed.

The mayor requested that council go by the cemetery and check out the new signage.

A motion was made by John Lafferty for executive session ORC 121.22 G2 property and G1 personnel, second by Benny McCarty, roll call vote: all yea. Motion by Steve Rothwell to return to regular session, second by Benny McCarty, roll call vote: all yea.

The motion to adjourn was made by Steve Rothwell, second by Benny McCarty, roll call vote: all yea, meeting adjourned.
