Two people escaped injury after their home was destroyed by fire on Friday, Nov. 20. The West Union Fire Department, Station 18, was called to the home of Greg Young on Redbud Lane near West Union at 4:30 p.m.
According to WUFD Lieutenant Christeena Patrick, the structure was fully engulfed in flames when responders arrived.
Approximately 40 firefighters spent three hours battling the blaze that was started when Young accidentally dropped a heater he was carrying into his home.
Nine tanker trucks and four engines from across the county responded: Station 17 of Cherry Fork FD, Station 15 of Peebles FD, Station 13 of Manchester FD, Station 16 of Seaman FD, and the Byrd Twp. FD from Decatur in Brown County. The West Union life squad also responded.
Lt. Patrick explained, “It’s common to have multiple departments respond to a country structure fire to provide water from tanker trucks.”
However, limited access to the structure allowed only one engine near the modular home forcing firefighters to drop 300 feet of hose to reach the fire, which was fought from two attack lines. The building was completely destroyed.
The Red Cross was also on the scene to assist the family.
