The 2015 Wendy’s High School Heisman award winners have been announced and six local student/athlets were among those honored on Nov. 18 in ceremonies held at the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Portsmouth.

Eligibility for a Wendy’s Heisman begins with maintaining a GPA of 3.0 (B average) or better. Applicants also need to be proven leaders and role models within their school and community and applicants must perform in at least one of the 43 school sponsored sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games or the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The six Adams County winners of 2015 Wendy’s Heisman awards are McKayla Vogler from the Adams County Christian School, Ashley Hackworth from West Union High School, Taylor Wylie and Trey Meade from North Adams High School, and Morgan Johnson and Jordan Freeman from Manchester High School. A plaque will be placed in the local Wendy’s restaurant to recognize their accomplishments.

For the past 20 years, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award has recognized the achievements of exceptionally well-rounded student/athletes. Like the collegiate Heisman Memorial Trophy, known as being the highest award given to a college football player, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Program recognizes the all-star performances of high school seniors in the classroom, on the field, and in their community. One male and one female winner are chosen as School Winners from nearly 48,000 applicants nationwide.

When students from a local school are recognized by a Wendy’s High School Heisman, it creates a sense of achievement and accomplishment that’s contagious. Younger students will be inspired to learn, perform, and lead and the entire student body will see the rewards of high achievement in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.
