Not even Mother Nature sending down a downpour that caused nearly an hour delay could dampen the spirits in the grandstand on Monday, July 14 at the Adams County Fair as cheerleading squads from around the area gathered for the fair’s annual cheer competition.

After the rather damp delay, the Junior High squads took the mats first and when it was all said and done, it was to be the girls from North Adams Junior High taking home the first place trophy for their efforts. Second place went to Manchester Junior High and third to West Union Junior High.

”Not even the rain could put a damper on the cheerleaders and fans spirit, “said North Adams Junior High cheerleading coach Trina Stapleton. “All of the squads came out and performed very well. I am very proud of my squad and the other cheerleaders that represent our county.”

After the Junior High competition was completed, it was time for the county’s high school squads to take center stage, plus one addition as the cheer squad from Ripley High School also took part.

When all the tumbling, flipping, and cheering was done, it was North Adams High School, for the first time since 2009, making it a clean sweep of the competition by also grabbing the first place trophy. In a repeat of the Junior High results, Manchester took the second place trophy and third place went to West Union.

“We have a fantastic group of girls this year,” said North Adams varisty cheer coach Sally Anderson. “They have blended very well and worked very hard. The seasoned members have made it their goal to help the new members and all of their hard work paid off. We still have a long way to go but this was a terrific first showing for this group and the coaches couldn’t be prouder of them.”

“We knew this would be a tough competition because schools in this area take cheerleading very seriously and if you want to win you better be prepared.”
