The West Union boy’s golf team will be headed to state next weekend after finishing second in the southeastern district tournament on Oct. 5.

The Dragons last made the state tournament in 2007 in Division II when they finished 11th over the course of the two day tournament.

The top two teams qualified for the state tournament and despite finishing 23 strokes behind first-place Waterford, the Dragons earned their spot finishing 12 strokes ahead of third-place Chesapeake as they shot a 347 team score.

Sophomore Elijah McCarty, who recently was the winner of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Tournament, tied for the third-best individual score and led the Dragons as a team shooting a round of 79 after shooting a 39 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine. Other scores on the team included junior Craig Horton (88), junior Tyler Fowler (90), freshman Jacob Pell (90) and sophomore Eli Fuller (91).

North Adams was the only other Adams County team participating. The Green Devils finished seventh out of 10 full teams with a team score of 379.

Sophomore Bryant Lung led the Green Devils, shooting a round of 88, good enough for a tie for 13th place individually, after shooting a 44 on both the front and back nine. Other North Adams scores included sophomore Noah Lung (93), sophomore Colt Schumaker (97), junior Patrick England (101) and senior Corey McClellan (103).

The Division III state tournament will take place Oct. 16-17 at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus with teams teeing off at 9 a.m. Be sure to read the Oct. 21 issue of the People’s Defender for coverage of the tournament.
